I want to download this movie so bad. Were there copyright problems or something? It was up on saturday, but I didn't get to download the whole thing.

Unfortunately, it's not public domain.

This movie has been shown by late night horror hosts for years as a public domain film. What is your source for saying Plan 9 is still under copyright? Just curious.

The Library of Congress's Copyright Registration Database at (http://www.copyright.gov).

I know that it has been shown by many TV stations over the years - mostly because no one was around to enforce the copyright. But, like "It's a Wonderful Life," the film's copyright holders are enforcing copyrights of the film and its screenplay.

No, it's not in public domain: http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=18&;ti=1,18&Search%5FArg=Plan%209%20From%20Outer%20Space&Search%5FCode=TALL&CNT=25&PID=20552&SEQ=20080516150319&SID=1

The link you post to is not the movie Plan 9 From Outer Space. It's an audio recording called Plan 9 From Outer Space: A NIGHTMARE RHAPSODY.

"Basis of Claim: New Matter: compilation of preexisting recordings; editing, additional sound effects."

In other words, this guy took the Plan 9 From Outer Space soundtrack AND ADDED EXTRA STUFF TO IT. This is a work that is not the same thing as the original movie. PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN! This guy's copyright claim is USING a public domain movie as the basis for a new work. It's not the same thing.

Ed Wood's wife requested a copyright renewal in 1984:

--------------------------------------------------
Type of Work: Recorded Document
Document Number: V1989P321
Date of Recordation: 1984-06-22
Entire Copyright Document: V1989P321-328
Date of Execution: 11Jun84
Registration Number Not Verified: PA 112-906.
Title: Plan 9 from outer space; motion picture / PA 112-906.
Notes: Assignment.
Party 1: Mrs. Edward D. Wood, Jr., successor of rights of Reynolds Pictures, Inc. & The Estate of Edward D. Wood, Jr.
Party 2: Wade H. Williams 3d.

Names: Wood, Mrs. Edward D., Jr.
Williams, Wade H. 3d
Reynolds Pictures, Inc.
Edward D. Wood, Jr., Estate of
--------------------------------------------------

What's interesting about this is that Plan 9 was released in 1959; The request came in the 25th year of the original term. Technically, the request had to come in the 28th year in order to be implemented. No request was made at that time. Video-Cellar, what do you think?

Any Copyright Lawyers out there who are fans of Plan 9? Could you clear this up?
